Max Verstappen of Red Bull claimed pole position at Imola on Friday, narrowly beating out Ferrari's Charles Leclerc in a thrilling qualifying session for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.

Verstappen's Dominance

Verstappen, who currently leads the championship standings, set a blistering lap time of 1:27.999 to clinch his second pole of the 2022 season. Leclerc, who had been on pole in the previous two races, settled for second with a time of 1:28.017.

Ferrari's Struggle

Despite Leclerc's strong performance on Friday, Ferrari faced challenges with Carlos Sainz Jr. crashing his car in the final qualifying session. Sainz will now start the sprint race from the back of the grid. Sergio Perez finished a disappointing seventh for Red Bull, failing to capitalize on the momentum from his victory at Albert Park.

Midfield Tightens

The midfield battle in Imola is expected to be intense, with Mercedes' George Russell, Alfa Romeo's Valtteri Bottas, and Haas' Kevin Magnussen all showing competitive pace. Fernando Alonso of Alpine will start fourth, while Lando Norris of McLaren qualified eighth.
